At this point, none of us are strangers to the idea that healthy skin and natural beauty starts from what you consume on a daily basis. We’ve been told time after time, “Drink more water and eat your vegetables.” While that advice does play a large role, sadly, for most of us, this advice alone does not suffice. Here’s the fact, natural beauty does come from within. However, most of us are unable to get the amounts of the nutrients that we need in order to have glowing skin, fresh eyes, and moisturized lips through our diets alone. When it comes to glowing skin, bright eyes, and shiny hair, supplements are a must. However, supplements are meant to be exactly what they sound like - a supplement to your daily nutrition. In combination with adequate water intake and a well-rounded diet, they play a very viable role in preventing premature aging, brightening your eyes, evening your skin tone, and bringing dull skin back to life.
So now without further ado, here are my top 2 affordable Must Have Beauty Supplements...
1. Vitamin C (and lots of it!)
Vitamin C is my holy-grail beauty supplement. It’s my holy grail supplement in general. If I had to choose only one supplement to take for the rest of my life - you guessed it, Vitamin C. But you get the point…
Vitamin C is most widely known for its immune system support, but it actually goes way beyond that and has numerous beauty benefits too. Today, I want to briefly explain how Vitamin C affects your external beauty.
First of all, Vitamin C is an antioxidant that fights free radicals. To fully understand what this means though, we need to quickly review what free radicals really are.
So, what are free radicals and where do they come from?
Simply put, free radicals are atoms in your body that have split and are no longer paired up with electrons. These single atoms like to be paired, so once they split, they search your whole body to find a new electron to pair up with. The issue here is that this split atom (commonly referred to as a “free radical”) then takes an electron from another atom in order to replace its own. This disrupts the whole cell. Too much disruption to a cell can cause what is called, “Oxidative Stress.” Oxidative stress is known to cause premature aging along with some other MAJOR health issues, (but for the sake of this blog, I won’t go into those now.) Although these free radicals are known to be exacerbated by some external factors such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, alcohol consumption, and even just the sun, avoiding these things won’t protect you. This is because your body creates free radicals during its normal metabolic processes. This means that even the healthiest of bodies will experience free radicals to some degree.
Now just to recap…
↳ OXIDATIVE STRESS
↳ PREMATURE SKIN AGING
What role does Vitamin C play in this process?
The answer to this is short and sweet. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is known to fight free radicals. The way that this works is also pretty simple. Vitamin C is an electron so when you consume it, you are giving these free radicals in your body an electron to bond to instead of letting them pull one from another atom in your body, which as we just discussed, is what causes oxidative stress.
It’s pretty clear why Vitamin C made it to the top of my “Must Have Beauty Supplements" list.
Vitamin C helps to prevent premature aging by preventing damage caused by free radicals - and just to be clear, premature aging doesn’t only refer to wrinkles and fine lines. These are ALL included in premature aging:
- Fine lines
- Dry Skin
- Dry Lips
- Dark Spots
- Dark Circles
As you can see, Vitamin C packs a big punch, especially to be one of the more affordable supplements on the market! I take 1,000mg a day as a supplement. I’ll link the Vitamin C here that I have been using lately and LOVING for anybody that is interested...
Optitune puts their Vitamin C into capsules which makes it SO easy to break them apart use for topical skin treatments also - another affordable beauty hack!
Now that I have briefly gone over my favorite affordable beauty supplement, let me introduce you to number 2 on my list.
Okay, so I know that I just wrote two full pages raving about Vitamin C, but this is just ANOTHER area in which it really shines. Vitamin C helps both with collagen production and with collagen absorption. This is why I take these supplements every day and have made them staples in our household.
Collagen is Protein
Just like your protein powder is a protein derived from milk or plants, collagen is a protein that is derived from bones, skin, and tendons. The main difference here is the amino acid profile in each of these. Since the profiles are different, they also work differently within your body. Because of this, even just for simple muscle recovery reasons, it is a good idea to add in collagen to your daily stack.
Your body works to produce collagen, but this production slows down as you get older. It also is affected by your diet and other environmental factors so consuming a daily collagen supplement ensures that you are getting adequate amounts in order to reap all the benefits that it has to offer.
Beauty Benefits of Collagen Include:
Gut health - which we all know plays an ENORMOUS role in the appearance of your skin
Increased hair strength (goodbye breakage!)
Increased nail strength (nothing screams “timeless beauty” quite like a natural manicure IMO)
And just some non-beauty related benefits while we're talking about it…
Again - gut health
Brain health and function
Increased muscle mass
Increased bone strength
As you can see, the list of benefits from collagen is a hefty one. Collagen is a product that not only offers countless beauty benefits, but also supports recovery post workout!
One thing to remember...
Collagen doesn’t show results immediately. However, the results DO come. For me, I noticed them after about 3 weeks of religiously taking my collagen supplement every day. The biggest result that I’ve seen from it, and the reason I swear by it, is the difference that it has made in the moisture of my skin and lips. I used to ALWAYS and I mean, ALWAYS have chapped lips that no amount of Chapstick could ever cure, and dry skin that no amount of lotion could ever quench. After 3 weeks of taking my collagen I noticed that for the first time in my life, these were no longer problems for me – something that I never had imagined possible! Just like Vitamin C, Collagen crept its way into my daily routine and found its home in my supplement cabinet.
I’ll also link the collagen that I use for anybody that is interested here.
